Macoda lobbies for the rights of persons with disabilities
Malawi Council for Persons with Disabilities (Macoda) has advised traditional and religious leaders in Salima District to help advance the rights of persons with disabilities.
Speaking on Monday during the training of traditional and religious leaders on the rights of persons with disabilities, Macoda disability rehabilitation officer Master Kachule underscored the importance of enhancing awareness and understanding of the rights of persons with disabilities.

“Local leaders are important in advocating for inclusivity and support of persons with disabilities. Local leaders play a crucial role in ensuring that persons with disabilities receive the support and services they need in their villages,” he said.
The training comes at a time when the new Persons with Disabilities Act 2024 has been introduced, aiming to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities.
However, Kachule noted that there are still challenges in realising these rights in Salima District.
He said the initiative seeks to empower local leaders to become advocates of change, ensuring that persons with disabilities are treated fairly and have access to necessary resources.
Group village head Mikute I said it was sad that some parents of children with disabilities were not sending their children to school.
“I condemn such acts. The training has encouraged me to use legal instruments to ensure that perpetrators face the law,” she said.
Tamanda Magombo, a member of the Malawi Union for the Blind, shared lessons learned with his peers and emphasised the importance of understanding and respecting the rights of persons with disabilities.
“Everyone should know how their actions can affect us. I plan to engage my friends and fellow community members on disability rights,” he said.
Magombo said he wants equality in all spheres of life, including economy, health service delivery and education
